Anime Was (Not) a Mistake is back for Season 2! Release the Raccoon! Following the typical anime structure, you know what that means? It’s time for a fighting tournament! Your hosts, Dan and Jonathan, have each chosen a champion to represent them in the hopes of claiming glory, fame, and primo animation. Make no mistake, we will be at each other’s throat but, if we happen to learn a thing or two along the way...what a concept. It’s Satoshi Kon vs. Mamoru Hosada. First, in the bracket is Kon’s pervasive, and dream-like look into pop idol fame, 1997’s Perfect Blue. Mima may be trying to break into acting, but she must be careful, there’s a stalker after her and she’s not sure if she’s going insane. Whatever the reason, this episode will get your heartbeat racing! "Your heart goes thump-thump-thump-thump, when you’re in love, but it pays off, pays off, when you’re loved back!"

If you are a fan of magical schools, world changing blooms, and homunculi, this may be the film for you. Will this be the most incredible Studio Ghibli adjacent film yet? On a very special Anime Was (Not) A Mistake, we take an intimate peek behind the kimono at the inner workings of Studio Ghibli with the 2013 documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. During the production of both The Wind Rises and The Tale of Princess Kaguya Ghibli begins the process of letting go of Miyazaki, Takahata, and Suzuki after years of hard work and beautiful animation. Amidst the bittersweet feelings, the audience is introduced to the trio that started it all, hard at work, and full of ideals. Politics, Peace, and Planes are all on the schedule, but you must realize that these are not gods…but men… and with Anime, anything is possible!

On this episode of Anime Was (Not) a Mistake we deal with allergies and alcoholism on a retrospective of The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Isao Takahata is back with a vengeance to bring Studio Ghibli to a close, with his final work. We examine the use of bamboo as symbolism for childhood’s relationship to adulthood, and a catalyst to the supernatural. Round, round, round, waterwheel, go round! Time is impermanent and bamboo is eternal. Is this the “real” conclusion to the Ghibli canon? You will have to watch the fledgling sprout shoot, in order to find out. Don your extravagant kimono, stall your suitors, and, discover if Anime was Not a Mistake or not?

"All I wanted to do was to make something beautiful." On open wings we soar, into the freedom and splendor of the sky, on this episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake. In what was considered, at the time to be, a “farewell” for Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki, we take a look at the emotional animated biopic of Jiro Horikoshi as he strives to build upon mankind’s age-old desire to fly. Will this prove to the pride before the fall, for both protagonist and creator? Well, you will just have to stick around to find out. Propeller? Check. Ignition? Ready. Is your seat buckled? Then, Let’s Go!
