Isao Takahata is back with a vengeance to bring Studio Ghibli to a close, with his final work. We examine the use of bamboo as symbolism for childhood’s relationship to adulthood, and a catalyst to the supernatural. Round, round, round, waterwheel, go round! Time is impermanent and bamboo is eternal. Is this the “real” conclusion to the Ghibli canon? You will have to watch the fledgling sprout shoot, in order to find out.
